Pet Friendly Places
If you visualize Wisconsin as a left-hand mitten, then Door
County is the thumb between Green Bay and Lake Michigan. People -
and their pets - visit year round and especially during
cherry-picking season from mid-July to late August.
Lodging ranges from elegant B&Bs to venerable hotels and
modern resorts and pet-friendly Egg Harbor provides an online list of accommodations which
welcome pets. Particularly dog-friendly is the Cottage Retreat in Egg Harbor.
Owner Dale LaViolette has built "green" cottages and a lodge that
can accommodate up to 20 people and pets. All have full kitchens,
outdoor barbecue facilities and are near to walking trails on his
15 acres. White Labrador siblings Norma and Garrett greet guests
and love to play.
A good orientation is aboard the Door County Trolley where
local owner A.J. Frank invites you to bring Fido on his Scenic,
Ghost and Lighthouse outings and Premier Wine Tours that include
four local wineries (ever have cherry wine?) and a gourmet
lunch.
There are many well-kept state and county parks for camping,
hiking, biking and swimming. Whitefish Dunes includes a special dog
beach.
Jorns' Sugar Bush is the sweet
business of Roland and Donna Jorns who have a ton of local history
to impart. He'll be 82 this summer and still taps some 5000 maple
trees for sap which he boils down to prize-winning syrup. And your
dog will get a skritch behind the ears here, too.
